Ryan Braun Wins Appeal

Back in December we learned that Ryan Braun, the 2011 National League MVP, tested positive for Performing Enhancing Drugs. (http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/7338271/ryan-braun-milwaukee-brewers-tests-positive-performance-enhancing-drug) Today, we learned that Ryan Braun is clean. (http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7608360/ryan-braun-wins-appeal-50-game-suspension)

This isn’t going to be about if Braun is clean or not. We learned that he’s clean and I agree. He challenged the system and won. Congrats there guy. The real question should be pointed at the drug testing in Major League Baseball.

In a sport where doping is notorious, this is not a good sign. What does this say about every other positive test in the past? What does this mean for future positive tests? Especially since the urine sample sat in some dude’s fridge and in the FEDEX office overnight. Not a good look for MLB.

MLB didn’t help by releasing the WORST press release in the history of press releases. Can’t argue science there, Bud. Here’s their awful press release http://www.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120223&content_id=26824844&vkey=pr_mlb&c_id=mlb&partnerId=aw-5925382037997750428-996

So the MLBPA responded with a better worded response: “Today the Arbitration Panel announced its decision, by a 2-1 vote, to sustain Ryan Braun’s grievance challenging his 50-game suspension by the Commissioner’s Office. Under the Joint Drug Agreement, a player’s successful challenge to a suspension normally would not have been made public. The parties have agreed, given the particulars of this case, that an announcement is appropriate.”

Ryan Braun’s statement can be found here through his agent’s twitter account (lame) http://brewersbeat.mlblogs.com/2012/02/23/braun-statement/ . We won’t hear anything from Braun till he reports to camp tomorrow. But he doesn’t owe us anything. He has his justice and is proven innocent.

Good for Braun. He’s clean and doesn’t owe anybody anything. Who needs to talk? MLB and their drug testers. A flawed system just got a huge black eye.
